Flight carrying cheetahs from Namibia to land in MP’s Gwalior on Sept 17

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A day earlier than the scheduled arrival of eight cheetahs from Namibia, the authorities revealed that the touchdown vacation spot of the particular cargo airplane carrying these felines has been modified – from Jaipur in Rajasthan to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking to PTI on Friday, principal chief conservator of forest (PCCF) wildlife, J S Chauhan, stated, “The cheetahs will arrive in Gwalior and from there they are going to be flown in a particular helicopter to the KNP.” The eight cheetahs – 5 females and three males will probably be introduced from Namibia’s capital Windhoek to Gwalior airport in a personalized Boeing 747-400 plane, officers have stated earlier.

Chauhan confirmed that the cheetahs from Gwalior will probably be shifted to KNP helipad within the Indian Air Pressure (IAF) Chinook heavy-lift helicopter.

In keeping with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), a global not-for-profit organisation headquartered in Namibia and devoted to saving the cheetah within the wild, the 5 feminine cheetahs are aged between two and 5 years and the male cheetahs are aged between 4.5 years and 5.5 years.

The final cheetah in India died in 1947 in Korea district in current day Chhattisgarh, which was earlier a part of Madhya Pradesh, and the species was declared extinct from India in 1952.

The ‘African Cheetah Introduction Venture in India’ was conceived in 2009 and a plan to introduce the massive cat by November final 12 months in KNP suffered a setback as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, officers stated.
