Human rights teams are demanding Sri Lanka withdraw a draft regulation that may give the federal government powers to arrange military-run “reeducation centres” which have been in comparison with China’s Uyghur detention centres in Xinjiang.

On Monday, Sri Lanka’s Supreme Courtroom started hearings on six petitions filed by civil society activists and opposition get together lawmakers towards the Bureau of Rehabilitation Invoice, deemed as unconstitutional and arbitrary.

The contentious Bureau of Rehabilitation Invoice was launched by Ranil Wickremesinghe’s authorities and was submitted to parliament on 23 September 2022.
