Environmentalists launched after allegedly being roughed up by Hun Sen’s bodyguards — Radio Free Asia


Police in Cambodia’s Takeo province on Tuesday launched a gaggle of younger environmental activists and journalists after they have been allegedly violently detained earlier within the day by bodyguards of Prime Minister Hun Sen as they tried to examine an space of a protected forest the place bushes had been cleared.

“We did not dare to say something as a result of they took us to their camp,” Vannak stated. “Nobody may assist us. I felt we have been with wild individuals, they did not take into account the regulation, they used solely violence. They detained and assaulted us arbitrarily.” 

Additionally among the many group was Hy Chhay, a journalist for the native impartial information outlet VOD who, based on Vannak, was slapped within the face by the bodyguards.

The group was transferred to a police facility in Takeo’s Bati district after which they have been launched.

RFA was unable to succeed in Bati district Police Chief Chhay Keomoni for touch upon Tuesday.

The bodyguards violated the constitutional rights of the activists and journalists, Nop Vy, director of the Cambodian Journalists Alliance Affiliation, instructed RFA.

“I’ve noticed that [authorities] respect solely their orders, [not the law],” Nop Vy stated. “It’s improper. Restrictions on the youths and journalists are opposite to Hun Sen’s choice to replant the bushes.”

The violence towards the group should be investigated, based on Soeung Sengkaruna, spokesman for the Cambodian Human Rights and Improvement Affiliation, a neighborhood 

rights group.

“It is a critical human rights violation,” he stated. 

The activists instructed RFA they plan to file a criticism towards the bodyguards.
