Italy chooses talks with Certares-led group over MSC-Luthansa bid.
Italy’s treasury has chosen to enter unique talks for the sale of a majority stake in ITA Airways with a consortium led by US non-public fairness fund Certares, in partnership with Air France-KLM and Delta Air Traces.
The plan, introduced on Wednesday, would doubtlessly see the Italian state retain a minority stake within the airline which launched final October as Italy’s flag service, changing the loss-making Alitalia.
The shock transfer sees Italy choose to enter into negotiations with the Certares-led consortium over a rival bid from Swiss-Italian delivery group MSC and German airline Lufthansa.
The federal government stated the proposal was “extra according to the targets set”, stressing that on conclusion of the talks, binding agreements can be signed provided that the deal is “completely passable for the general public stakeholder”.
The transfer might nonetheless face political hurdles, together with from the chief of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia, Giorgia Meloni, who’s tipped to turn out to be Italy’s prime minister after normal elections later this month.
