وعلى ارتفاع 9000 قدم فوق مستوى سطح البحر، تطلق الطائرة شعلات ملحية في السحب البيضاء الواعدة، على أمل أن يتسبب ذلك في هطول الأمطار.

وتسعى الامارات الى الاستفادة من كل قطرة ماء عبر تقنية تلقيح الغيوم والاستمطار من اجل سد جزء من حاجاتها المائية المتزايدة.

وقال الحمادي، رئيس قسم الاستمطار في المركز الوطني للأرصاد في الإمارات العربية المتحدة، إن الاستمطار يتطلب وجود السحب الممطرة، مشيرا إلى أن الحال ليس كذلك دائما.

وتقود الإمارات، جهود تلقيح السحب وزيادة هطول الأمطار.

وقد أدت تأثيرات تغير المناخ، فضلا عن تزايد عدد السكان وتنويع الاقتصاد في السياحة ومجالات أخرى، إلى زيادة الطلب على المياه في الإمارات، التي تعتمد على محطات تحلية المياه التي تستخدم مياه البحر.

ويعتقد مسؤولون أن تلقيح السحب مفيد، حيث يجمع علماء في أبوظبي بين إطلاق الشعلات الملحية الجاذبة للماء وبين إطلاق جزيئات الملح النانوية، وهي تقنية جديدة، في السحب لتحفيز وتسريع عملية التكثيف، على أمل إنتاج قطيرات كبيرة بما يكفي لتسقط في صورة أمطار.

وقال الحمادي “استمطار السحب يزيد من معدلات هطول الأمطار بحوالي 10 بالمئة إلى 30 بالمئة سنويا… وفقا لحساباتنا، تكلف عمليات تلقيح السحب أقل بكثير من عملية تحلية المياه”.

وأعلنت دول أخرى في المنطقة، منها المملكة العربية السعودية، خططا مماثلة لأنها تواجه موجات جفاف بسبب التغيير المناخي على مستوى العالم.

وقال إدوارد جراهام، خبير الأرصاد الجوية في جامعة المرتفعات والجزر في بريطانيا، إن الملح المستخدم في استمطار السحب في الإمارات لا يضر بالبيئة.

وأضاف “فيما يتعلق بالبصمة الكربونية، فإن الطائرات التي تطير وسط الغيوم مجرد طائرات صغيرة، مقارنة بمليارات السيارات على هذا الكوكب والطائرات الضخمة التي تقوم برحلات جوية دولية كل يوم، إنها مجرد قطرة في المحيط”.
