Stalin tells Jagan to drop plans on dams

Chennai: Chief Minister M Ok Stalin urged his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, Jagan Mohan Reddy, to not go forward together with his authorities’s plan to construct two reservoirs throughout the Kosasthalaiyar river close to Mukkalakandigai and Katharapalli villages in Chittoor district because it was essential to take the consent of the decrease riparian State to have any building throughout an inter-State river.

‘Chances are you’ll bear in mind that the Kosasthalaiyar river basin and Kosasthalaiyar river are inter-state in nature. The river basin covers a complete space of 3727 sq km of which 877 sq km lies in Andhra Pradesh and 2850 sq km lies in Tamil Nadu,’ Stalin mentioned in his letter to Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday.

Because it was learnt that the Authorities of Andhra Pradesh had permitted the building of the 2 reservoirs throughout the Kosasthalaiyar, the transfer had triggered nice anguish among the many folks dwelling in areas in and round Chennai as they trusted the river’s flows for ingesting water and to a small extent for irrigation, he mentioned.

The Poondi reservoir, constructed throughout Kosasthalaiyar, was a significant supply of ingesting water for Chennai metropolitan space and any new reservoir throughout the river, its tributaries or sub-tributaries would have an effect on the influx into it, thus significantly affecting the ingesting water provide to Chennai and its higher reaches, moreover impacting irrigation in that space, affecting the livelihood of farmers, Stalin mentioned.

‘Being an inter-state river, the higher riparian state can’t plan or give approval or assemble any new construction throughout Kosasthalaiyar with out the consent of the decrease riparian state. Therefore it’s disappointing that such a step has been taken, which could have a big antagonistic impression on our State, particularly on Chennai and its northern suburbs,’ he mentioned.

Urging Jagan Mohan Reddy to instruct the authorities involved in his Authorities to not go forward with the proposed reservoir initiatives and in addition to not take up any new initiatives within the Kosasthalaiyar river basin space in Andhra Pradesh, he sought his private intervention contemplating the sensitivity of the problem.
